Essentially, they\u2019re\nincubators for the future leaders of the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thermo Fisher\u2019s Leadership Development\nPrograms represent, at their core, a major investment in you <\/em>on the part of the company. That\u2019s why they pick their\ncandidates for Leadership Development Programs so carefully. But that doesn\u2019t\nmean you have to be intimidated by the recruitment process. You just need to\nprepare carefully so you can put your best foot forward. So, where do you begin\nand how can you stand out while interviewing for an opportunity that can change\nthe course of your career?    <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To find out exactly what they\u2019re looking for\nin their LDP candidates, we spoke to Hannah, a Thermo Fisher recruiter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are her tips for surviving (and thriving)\non the road to securing your spot in an LDP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. You\u2019re More Than Just Your Work Experience, So Let Them Know That<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The reason you got an interview is because the\nrecruiting team liked your resume. Remember, then, that the first interview is\na chance for you to show them more<\/em> than\nwhat\u2019s on there. Don\u2019t miss it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your resume told the recruiting team about\nyour work and internship experience. While it\u2019s important to use that\nexperience as a base for some of your answers, you should also take the\nopportunity to go deeper. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The point of this interview, whether it\u2019s in\nperson or on the phone, is to show them a bit of who you are as an individual.\nSticking too much to the script of your resume can be a major misstep. But, as\nHannah stresses, there are ways to avoid that pitfall. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOne of the biggest things I see that people\nare missing is centered around their leadership experience,\u201d Hannah says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Given your experience level, chances are, you\nhaven\u2019t had too many opportunities to take on leadership roles at work.\nHowever, school organizations, extracurriculars, and even classroom projects\nare all great examples of places where you could have exhibited leadership\nskills. Regardless of what the leadership experience revolves around, the\nability to demonstrate your potential is extremely valuable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Definitely Prepare, But Don\u2019t Over-Rehearse Your Answers (AKA Speak Naturally)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In any job interview, the recruiter or hiring\nmanager wants to get a better sense of who you actually are\u2014especially when\nthey\u2019re making such a major investment in you. That\u2019s why over-preparation can\nactually hurt you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOne of the things that we see that shoots\npeople in the foot when they’re interviewing is that their answers seem really\nscripted and almost too<\/em> perfect,\u201d\nHannah says. \u201cAnd for us, that doesn’t give a sense of who they are. It doesn’t\nfeel authentic. It doesn’t feel genuine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s true that you want to present the best\npossible version of yourself, but don\u2019t let that rob your answers of you<\/em>. Even if you prepared for a\nquestion, there\u2019s no harm in taking a moment to think about your answer and\nmove in a different direction. Speak from the heart, because according to\nHannah, that\u2019s what they\u2019re hoping you\u2019ll do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Don\u2019t Be Afraid To Talk About Mistakes You\u2019ve Made\u2014Just Do It Tactfully <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Many important interview questions focus on\nhow you\u2019d respond to various scenarios, both real and imagined. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe ask a lot of behavioral-based questions on\nleadership, because a lot of what we do at Thermo Fisher gives people\nresponsibility and allows people to make decisions and take risks,\u201d Hannah\nsays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the stakes are as high as they are in an\nLDP, the company needs to know how you act under pressure. However, that\ndoesn\u2019t mean they want you to only describe a situation or tell them about a\ntime when everything went perfectly. Why? Because even if it\u2019s true, it doesn\u2019t\nreally demonstrate the kind of adaptability and self-awareness that they\u2019re\nlooking for at Thermo Fisher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe really want to see how you took a\nsituation that you maybe struggled in and how did you come out from that?\nAnswering around self-awareness is key instead of just feeling like all of\nthese answers have to be perfect,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Self-awareness and adaptability are hard to\nteach and extremely important for people who plan to grow a lot over the course\nof their time at a company\u2014which is essential for any successful LDP candidate.\nThat\u2019s why emphasizing adaptability and how you respond to mistakes is so\nimportant. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t gloss over these learnings\u2014talk about\nthem and emphasize the lessons you learned that\u2019ll help prevent you from making\nthe same mistakes again. That kind of self-reflection shows real growth,\nmaturity, and potential. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. As You Progress, Make Sure To Up Your Research Game And Come With Thoughtful Questions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The interview for an LDP at Thermo Fisher is a\nmultistep process, and it\u2019s as much about you getting to know them as it is the\nopposite. That\u2019s why it\u2019s okay to ask exploratory questions about the company\nearly on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think for that first recruiter\nconversation, it’s okay to come in and ask questions,\u201d Hannah says. \u201cBut I\nthink the biggest mistake that I see a lot of times is, once they get past that\nfirst round and they move on to that next step, they haven\u2019t done enough\nresearch.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After that initial conversation, you\u2019ll\nadvance to an on-campus interview with a hiring manager or an LDP graduate who\nis now a leader at the company. And it\u2019s essential to come prepared. As the\ninterviews progress, don\u2019t rest on your laurels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou don’t have to come in knowing everything.\nBut find a recent article about something Thermo Fisher did in the news or in\nthe community or maybe about one of our acquisitions, and then ask questions\nabout that,\u201d Hannah explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat shows our leadership team that you’re\ninterested and that you’re curious. Curiosity is such an important quality in\nan interview process because it shows that you’re going to be curious when you\ncome to work every day. It shows that you\u2019re going to challenge the norm and\nask questions and bring 110 percent every day,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the time you get to the last round of\ninterviews (a two-day event at the company\u2019s headquarters in Waltham, MA), you\nshould have a few good talking points ready for any conversation you might have\nwith a leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Don\u2019t Be Afraid To Ask Your Recruiter For Advice<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

After you pass the first-round phone\ninterview, your recruiter is there to be your ally. After all, they chose you\nto enter the process and they have a vested interest in your success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf you’re curious about something and you\u2019re\nnot sure, reach out to your recruiter and ask them. ‘Is the manager going to\nwant to see a cover letter? Are they going to want references?’ I can always\nanswer that,\u201d Hannah says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If there are any administrative questions you\nhave about timing, location, or the format of interviews, you don\u2019t have to\nworry about bothering the hiring manager by asking. Just follow up with your\nrecruiter and they\u2019ll get back to you with the info you need. They can even\nanswer some broader questions like, \u201cWhat kinds of traits does the hiring manager\nlook for in their top candidates?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
