David leads a team of sales recruiters at National General Insurance, but unlike most recruiters, their job isn’t just to judge you on your resume and put you into a pass-or-fail pile. David and his team want to talk. Seriously.
If you apply to National General Insurance, they’ll give you a call. If you don’t pick up, they’ll leave a voicemail and send you an email. Then they’ll call again. That’s because having a real conversation is an essential part of the recruiting process at NatGen. So, they speak to every candidate on the phone.
This new recruiting process is just the latest in a line of innovative steps the company has taken to stay competitive, both as a company and an employer. And so we spoke to David to find out a bit more about it—and how you could end up finding your dream job with them because of it.
One of the hardest things for any growing business is to find the right volume and quality of salespeople. They’re the lifeblood of any organization. Without a great sales team, the product, ideas, and mission simply won’t exist for very long without new business to keep them going and growing.
National General has been in the insurance industry since 1939, and they’ve expanded and innovated to become a leader today. This new approach to sales recruiting, David says, is just another part of that growth.
“We just don’t stand with the old guard of, ‘This is how recruiting was always done,’” David says. “We were growing so quickly that we just couldn’t do that anymore.”
The next step for the NatGen team was to look at the data.
“We reviewed our best performers, their resumes, how they interview, and we realized that we can’t just go off their resumes,” he explains.
Instead, his team at NatGen contacts every candidate and has a regular conversation. This has led David and his team to find many “diamonds in the rough,” essentially, people who might not be the most skilled at crafting resumes, but actually have what it takes to succeed in sales.
There’s another major benefit, too, to NatGen’s method: It takes place over the phone, which—as a test of sales ability—actually makes a lot of sense.
“You can have the best resume in the world, but if you can’t connect over the phone, if you don’t take an interest in the person you’re talking to, and if you’re just not likable, you’re just not going to do well in this role,” David explains. “We’re looking for intangibles that you’re just not going to get from reading black and white text.”
Sales is a particularly tough industry for turnover—in fact, there’s a minimum of 20% every year. The biggest reasons are a lack of proper training, poor performance, and low morale. Basically, David says, “We know that if they’re not making money, they’re not happy, they’re not feeling the team environment, they’re gonna leave.”
And that’s why the team at NatGen didn’t stop at changing the recruiting process. They redesigned the onboarding and training process, too.
Weeks before you arrive, you’ll already be put in contact with your sales trainer, team lead, and veteran agents who can help you begin the learning and on-boarding process. Once you arrive at the company, the focus will be on a combination of formal training with experiential learning and one-on-one coaching.
The reason it works so well at NatGen, David explains, is because they’re utilizing their top performers to train the newer classes.
“What we did was create a whole new department for new-hire team leads,” he says. “So, we promoted our best team leaders on our sales side to meet and grow the new candidates as they come in.”
The trainers and managers for new hires at NatGen have real, “in-the-trenches” knowledge to share with their classes because they all started in that role. This ensures that each individual salesperson at NatGen can rely on mentorship and training, as well as a sense of belonging, because that what makes salespeople succeed.
David and the team at NatGen want everyone they hire to realize their potential—and that’s why they’ve put so much into finding and honing new talent.
“We don’t just have you come in, watch a few things, and say, ‘Good luck!,’” David says. “We’re invested in you.”Want to start a career with a company that looks for the best in you—and then helps you realize it? Check out open opportunities at National General!

Technological and scientific advancement isn’t confined to the labs of space agencies and secretive government facilities. Products that we use in our everyday lives as seemingly simple as sunscreen make huge leaps forward because of new technologies. And when a passion for science is coupled with the value of sustainability, innovation sprouts in wonderful ways. That’s why it shouldn’t surprise you to find out that one of the world’s most innovative businesses is actually a 109-year-old company whose products you might have used today and that you’ve absolutely heard of: L’Oréal.
L’Oréal is innovating on a number of different fronts, from UV sensors to customized, on-demand skincare. Employees across the company embrace this spirit on innovation and culture of entrepreneurship: from the labs to commercial sales, from supply chain to marketing, new ideas are being brought to market all the time. (That’s probably why they hire so many college grads and interns!)
Here’s the story of how one new brand – SEED Phytonutrients – arose from the combination of this unique culture and a passion for a lofty goal – sustainability.
“So I had this idea about a natural, sustainable brand, but it wasn’t without risk” says Shane Wolf, Worldwide GM of Redken, Pureology, Mizani, and SEED Phytonutrients. L’Oréal’s entrepreneurial culture enabled and supported him to move his idea forward. “I had one final pitch meeting in Paris . . . getting that final yes was an indescribable moment and I wasted no time getting started.”
Shane and his team are prime examples of how employees at a large global organization can be true “intrapreneurs” in their company.
L’Oréal took a strategic bet to incubate this great idea into what is today a cutting edge line of natural, sustainable products. The team at SEED employs unique, highly effective applications of cold-pressed sunflower and camelina seed oils (rich in antioxidants and other stuff that makes your face and body glow) in order to produce their powerful but face-friendly skincare line.
But it’s not just the quality of the product that’s amazing. The sunflowers and camelina used in the products are sourced exclusively from local, family-owned farmers with superb ecological impact standards. And to top it off, they developed the first shower-friendly paper bottles made of 100% post-consumer recycled paper with a post-consumer recycled plastic liner. The packaging is produced entirely from recycled, post-consumer cardboard (preventing it from hitting landfills) and—more interestingly—chalk. Chalk acts as an antimicrobial agent to protect the product inside. Another huge plus: It’s naturally occurring and non-polluting (and it works great on blackboards).
Products like those in the SEED line also empower people to choose a different way to take care of their skin. In fact, the breadth of L’Oréal’s entire product line empowers people to pick what’s right for their skin and help them find the look that suits them.
And, of course, SEED’s new line tackles both the issue of ethical ingredient sourcing AND that of environmental damage due to disposable plastic packaging.
Whether you’re a tech person with a passion for the environment or an entrepreneurial product person with an eye on the future of tech integration, L’Oréal is a place where you can make a difference.

Applying to your first full-time job can be confusing. Often you have no idea where to start. What are the kinds of titles you should be searching for? How can you leverage your internship and other professional connections to help?
But, one of the most confusing aspects is the timing: When should you start applying to your first full-time job?
The answer is: Way sooner than you’d probably think (although, you’re not in too much trouble if you haven’t started yet).
The answer to this question depends heavily on the industry you’re looking to enter.
If it’s finance, then many of the top programs secure hires through return offers at the end of summer internships. Other hires are made throughout the year, but the hiring process can start as early as the beginning of the academic year. So, if you’re about to be a senior (or a second semester senior), then there really is never too early a time to apply.
This is also true of places like consulting and accounting firms. However, it’s important to note that many of these places extend their candidate search throughout the year. So, don’t be disheartened if you haven’t already kicked off your hunt.
If you’re not in one of these select industries, then chances are you can start looking and applying for full-time jobs during winter break or at the end of the first semester (assuming you graduate in the spring).
The same rules apply for recent grads. If you’re less than a year out of school and hoping to find or transition to a job in the finance, accounting, and consulting fields, you should expect the process to be a long one.
Some places, like startups and media companies, hire so few people that they really only do it as needed. If you want to work at one of these places, check out online job postings, and apply. If you’re not seeing anything at a company you really admire, then you should try to get in contact with a university recruiter or early career recruiter at the company. Tell them you’re interested, when you’re graduating, and what you would want to do for them.
Most entry-level job recruiting cycles work differently than their more senior-level counterparts.
These companies want talent fresh out of college and they understand that the people applying to these entry-level roles most likely will not be available until January or June. That’s why it’s okay to start applying so soon.
Here are a couple of signs it’s okay to apply for the job early-on (or at any point) in your senior year:
If the job doesn’t fall underneath any of these categories, then you’re still good to start applying as soon as the end of your first semester. The recruiting process can take months, for all types of roles, so there really is no harm in starting to apply before or during your second semester of senior year.
The biggest lesson here is not to delay—especially if you’re going to need the funds to stay in your preferred city or start a new life somewhere else. Don’t leave the job hunt to one of the busiest (and best) times of your senior year: the end.

Top students can upload their notes and study guides to the StudySoup Marketplace, providing their peers with helpful materials while also earning some extra cash.
So you’ve just graduated from college and you have a few job options lined up — and one of them is remote. The remote job pays just as much as your other offers and it involves work that you’d genuinely enjoy doing, but is it really the right career move for you?
Here are some factors to consider when deciding whether to take a remote job right out of college.
Working remotely from home usually implies that there will be flexibility in your schedule. You don’t have to commute to and from work, you don’t necessarily need to spend as much time getting ready in the morning, and you’re able to set your own start times and breaks as long as you meet your deadlines. From a social aspect, work schedule flexibility might seem ideal to a recent graduate because the rest of their social circle might not have full-time jobs yet; having a flexible schedule will allow you to spend more time with them during what would otherwise be working hours. After all, only 54% of 2015 college graduates found traditional full-time employment.
Furthermore, a flexible schedule means you have time to see the world during a time when it’s never been easier to see even the most remote areas. If you didn’t get to travel and record the world while in college, working remotely might give you the opportunity to do so.
However, having a flexible schedule might work against your social life as well. Many remote jobs exist because an international company needs workers from all over the world. This means that a remote worker’s headquarters might be in a different time zone, which could lead to odd-hour deadlines. You might find that you have time to socialize with friends during weekdays, but you might also find that you can’t spend time with your social circle because you have to stay up all night working to meet a 4 AM deadline.
So, when considering your social schedule, is this remote job opportunity really going to give you the flexibility you need?
Experience, obtainable both in-office and remotely, is necessary for every stage of employment. That said, experience and the quality of your work output are often not the only requirements for advancement in your career. Networking remains as one of the most crucial elements of career advancement as around 85% of all jobs are filled via networking. Not all networking is the same, however, so take the time to examine how you can network in your field.
Some fields, such as business and law, require the formation of personal relationships. As such, face-to-face interactions with your coworkers and employers are likely necessary for advancement. These interactions can be difficult to achieve while working from home and, thus, a remote job might not the best fit if this is your situation.
Conversely, if you’re in a field that involves less direct interaction, such as internet security or web development, working remotely might provide you with opportunities for advancement. Many remote companies operate globally, so you might be able to network on a much larger scale than you would otherwise be able to in a traditional office.
Networking is constantly necessary and usually should start prior to graduation. Does your career require the formation of traditional personal relationships? If so, a remote job might not be the best idea right out of college.
Having a steady, quality income is important to recent graduates, especially for those with student loans. Many remote jobs offer salaries that are competitive or even superior to the salaries associated with traditional in-office jobs. However, it’s important to remember that there are other important perks that come with traditional employment.
Many remote jobs classify their workers as independent contractors rather than as employees. This helps the employer avoid certain costs and fees while maintaining a workforce. Some of these expenses include health insurance, retirement plans, tuition reimbursement, and other forms of compensation. These may seem like inconsequential perks, but they can add up really quickly.
For instance, the average cost of an emergency room visit in the United States is $1233. With health insurance, this type of problem could be lessened or even completely covered depending on the type of insurance you have. Without insurance, this amount could represent a significant portion of your paycheck.
Do the math concerning your yearly expenses. Is your potential remote income really higher than the income you’d earn as an employee when considering benefits and savings?
Working from home might seem like the ideal situation right out of college. You get to set your own schedule, work on a global scale, and make good money. However, remote work is not ideal for recent graduates in every field. After reading the considerations above, does your remote opportunity seem like it’ll be the ideal fit for you?
